Newbie Special: So You've Never Even Heard or Had an Emergency Fund Before?
October 1, 2018
Well, it's that time of year again! It’s where budgets go out the window and “sales” are more bountiful than ever before. It's the holidays which means it's getting close to Christmas time if you choose to celebrate! Either way, I imagine most human beings can't help but to feel the pressure of overspending or feel like they deserve to treat themselves! After all, if you don't buy tons of gifts for everyone then you’re not in the holiday spirit. It's funny to think about how all the American holidays have turned into a consumer splurge in one way or another.
For what feels like an eternity, my brother and I have enjoyed the tradition of trading cheap gag gifts instead of playing amongst the sheep in the herd. To be clear, we both choose to spend wisely on entertainment that our families appreciate throughout the year. We have a blast trying to hunt down the best present that has an inside joke at a thrift shop or crafting a homemade item. Those types are usually termed the “creek of the crop” since neither of us have an artistic bone in our bodies. Do you know what the best part is?!? It is something that is hilarious and not thrown into a pile of expensive garbage or ends up in a pathetic yard sale years later.
So… here is our homemade Christmas gift that we have practiced for years. Consider it an early present! Week one is very easy to most people; buy a $52.00 present - to yourself. That's exciting! However, just like the New Year's’ Resolution, you have to make a promise to keep it.
Every week for the next year, you add the same dollar amount minus $1. At the end of the following year, you managed to not only save extra money, but also created an emergency fund! Guess what, it wasn't hard and you can simply repeat the process since it will restart the same time every year! To those wondering, at the end of the 52 week challenge you have a grand total of $1,531.00! After a year of this practice, you could find it rewarding to increase the weekly amounts and have a larger cash horde for anything you wish!
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Let’s get this next year started the right way!
